Regatta Recap

July 21, 2009 By: The Webmaster Category: General Info

By nearly any measure, the CYA Sail West regatta went very, very well!

The weather was extremely cooperative, providing for competition in a variety of conditions: light winds the first day, medium winds on Saturday, and then strong winds with whitecaps on Sunday. All sailors enjoyed the weekend, and the competition was intense. CYA Sail West 2009 might well be the most rewarding and successful regatta that has been held at the Battlefords Sailing Club venue.

Thirty-two boats and 39 sailors competed in 5 classes of boats during the event. Competitors hailed from points across Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. That is the largest number of boats attracted to the Battlefords Sailing Club regatta since 2002, when the Club last hosted Sail West. Unfortunately, competitors from British Columbia were conspicuously absent. Despite the lack of participants from BC, Battlefords Sailing Club and SSCA members are very happy with the success of the weekend.

The organizing committee would like to thank the many volunteers from the Battlefords, Meota, Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Regina and Vancouver who were instrumental in making the weekend a fun, safe and memorable event, along with local and provincial organizations who supported the event with financial contributions.

2009 CYA Sail West Regatta July 17 - 19, 2009

The Battlefords Sailing Club, Saskatchewan Sailing Clubs Association and the Canadian Yachting
Association (CYA) are excited to host the 2009 CYA Sail West Regatta. This exhilarating event
will take place July 17 to 19, 2009 on Jackfish Lake, managed from the Battlefords Sailing Club,
Meota SK. As the premiere annual sailing event in Western Canada, Sail West includes Western
Championships for several fleets of sailboats. Sail West is the largest sailing event to visit the
province on a regular basis.

The Battlefords Sailing Club is nestled on the southern shore of Jackfish Lake in the beautiful
village of Meota, SK located about 40 km north of North Battleford. The Club was founded in
1964 and moved into its present home in 1985. While the Club presently has a modest involvement
in racing, competitive sailing was central to Club activities at the time of establishment as is
evidenced by the location and facilities which are arguably the finest in Saskatchewan. The
Battlefords Sailing Club serves the sailing needs of the entire Battlefords region of Saskatchewan.
As a destination for many types of water-related recreation activities, casual sailors, athletes and
supporters will find all the amenities they require when they arrive.

Registration for Sail West takes place on Thursday, July 16th from 2:00pm to 10:00pm and on
Friday, July 17th from 7:00am to 9:00am. Races begin at 10:00am each day, Friday to Sunday.
The regatta is open to all boats of the 29er, Laser, Radial, Byte, Optimist, and Open (Portsmouth)
classes.

Come out and join the excitement! Cheer on your favourite sailor or team! Learn about sailing in
Western Canada! Everyone is welcome!
