This was the first regatta of the year for the District 5 Dick Degner series. There
were many issues with the very late melt, Canada Games rowing trials at
Wascana, getting equipment organized, etc., Manitoba cancelling, so we had a late venue change, just like “Regatta of the Year” Wabamun/Calgary in 2005
with the train crash (luckily no crash, pollution etc.).
The format is 20 short races, no drop, lots of interaction, starts, mark
roundings, little time between races, 2-1-go. Before you could be upset
about OCS, late dump, knots coming out, spring-time boat
maintenance/dropping mainsheet, etc., you were 2 minutes from the next start,
This is a training regatta, working on boat handling, racing skills and
making sure the intensity is up. This is because sailors would try to do
well in a race.
The strategy in the past for our development is to locally host events in
May and early June when the wind is good and to get on the water and travel
to the bigger Regional and National events in July, August and early
September. The schedule gets very busy in July, August.
Longest Drive is David and Phil, Bookend is Phil, Driftwood (first race of the year) is Lewis, Loudest is Payton, Radial Ellyn, Great Grand Master is David, Line pusher is Nic, loudest/quickest death roll, tie Connor and Joe.
